![]() ![]() Stranded Deep could have had a mechanic where making fire actually took some work. The Castaway character struggled through a couple of nights without warmth and light, until trying and trying and trying and finally succeeding to make fire. In Stranded Deep you start with a Lighter. Yet in Stranded Deep we start with one and can easily find many more. A plastic drinking bottle would have been priceless to him, let alone one with clean water in it too. Even later on, the character has to utilise empty coconuts with holes in them as 'make-shift' water bottles. Leading to desperately drinking from coconuts, fallen leaves and pools of muddy water. ![]() In Castaway, the character struggles to find sources of fresh water. In Stranded Deep you also start with a Water Bottle (with fresh water!) Yet in Stranded Deep I have more hammers, axes, machetes and knives than a well stocked hardware store! All of which have new handles and not a touch of rust on them! ![]() Instead the character uses items found in packages and the natural materials on the island to make what tools he needs. In Castaway, one of the plot points was that the character left behind a perfectly good Swiss Army knife, which would have been incredibly useful to him while stuck on the island. In Stranded Deep you start with a Pocket Knife. So I wonder why the developers of Stranded Deep made surviving so easy? Wasn't this the genre of game? The challenge simply being survival and not much else? If the survival aspect was more challenging, then the end-game would not be reached so quickly. Now clearly, Stranded Deep was heavily inspired by Castaway (amoung other sources, like Robinson Crusoe, etc.) I'll assume you've seen the film and/or know how to search the IMDB. So I watched the film "Castaway" (with Tom Hanks - and 'Wilson') again last night and realised that the survival aspect of Stranded Deep is far far too easy. ![]()
